This series of works presents to the viewer the excessive use of applying make up or having plastic surgery on the face and body in a means of changing and improving ones identity. However, this addiction to improving ones appearance and sometimes not knowing the limit causes the opposite to happen, sometimes having an adverse effect, the subject sometimes looking inhumane. This excessive use is apparent in these images, especially present in the way that the excess is dripping off, perhaps metaphorically resembling the removal of identity. The Medium used here is Icing Sugar, something which would be typically used as a decorative medium, however, being used here against its norm.

On a daily basis we are engulfed by images on glossy magazines, overwhelming advertisements on billboards and television promoting the Medias definition of the norm and ideal. These images dictate to a huge percentage of today’s society as to how their lives should be lived and how they should conform to reach this mainly unattainable goal. My work aims to address these concerns and promote to the viewer the huge impact that this has upon people, visualising those outsiders in society who would not normally be presented.
Working with video last year enabled me to present to the viewer, using the software called Portrait Professional, how i would adapt my face if i could so as i looked similar to those faces of models on magazines. The end result was satisfying and presented the extent to which faces can be manipulated using digital enhancement.
I am now in the process of introducing the use of video into my practice again, however, this time instead of using digital means of adapting my face, i shall be using makeup. Hopefully, i will be able to capture the transformation of my portrait as a professional make up artist applies make up to my face, creating a different person, one who would be more popular in the media world.

Part of the Clay Head Series
Clay Piece
Using a mould cast from a polystyrene model head, i succeeded in making a series of clay heads portraying portraits of people who would not normally be depicted in the media. These interpretations are transcribed from various images, ranging from people born with cleft deformities, those who have been purposely scarred, and those who have become so addicted to plastic surgery they have become un-recognisable. One in particular was interpreted from an image of myself as a baby before reconstruction surgery of cleft lip. This series meant a lot to me, as i aimed to give recognition to those people who differ from the Medias norm and raise awareness to the extremes in which plastic surgery can affect ones identity.
